Vegan hemp ice cream

Posted by in 21 Oct, 2009

I just came across this review in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Dining section: Hemp soft-serve takes center stage at Capitol Hill’s new nutrition bar.

Healeo is now on my “vegan places to check out” list. They’re in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood at 1520 15th Avenue.

I think coconut milk and hemp are duking it out for the title of “the new soy.”

I first noticed hemp milk as a non-dairy alternative in coffee shops a couple of years ago, and it’s available in aseptic cartons in various grocery stores. Coffee shops include Neptune Coffee in Greenwood. Grocery stores include Sidecar vegan grocery, PCC Natural Markets, Town & Country Markets (the Ballard one, at least), and Whole Foods Market.

More recently, I’m noticing a lot of vegan, coconut-milk-based products such as ice cream, creamer, and yogurt. I’ve bought coconut ice cream and yogurt at Sidecar and creamer and yogurt at Whole Foods. I’m drawing a blank on whether or which coconut milk products I’ve seen at other stores.

Full disclosure: Nothing to disclose

Posted by in 18 Oct, 2009

Beginning Dec. 1, 2009, bloggers who write product reviews must disclose any connections to the manufacturer of the product, and whether they received free products or were paid by advertisers. You can read more about this in the New York Times article, Soon, Bloggers Must Give Full Disclosure (published Oct. 5, 2009). You can also read the Federal Trade Commission’s (16 CFR Part 255) Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (PDF, 81 pages).

I’ve blogged about a bunch of restaurants and products over the past few years, and I assure you: Not only do I have, as far as I know, infinitesimally few readers*, but I have not received any free products or meals or been paid to blog about … well, anything.

* I have one friend who seems to periodically check my blog for new posts, and another friend who checks if I tell her I posted something she might find interesting. And I get the occasional trackback. Other than than, no readership to speak of — seriously, even The Boyfriend doesn’t read my blog on a regular basis.

Fall Friday Flora

Posted by in 2 Oct, 2009

Every year, I tell myself I won’t take any more “fall foliage” pictures. And every year, I take a bunch of “fall foliage” pictures. Because every year, I’m captivated by the amazing colors. And every year, the colors are a little different. Some years, yellow and gold prevail for weeks. Other years, red predominates. Or orange explodes, eliminating green and bypassing gold and red.

So, expect more “fall” pictures from me this year … and in years to come.

This doesn’t necessarily fit with the fall theme, but I like it:

Also not fall-related, but a gorgeous plant:
Flora07 08b

I think it’s another variety of the plant in the last two photos in this post.

That’s an unusual reward; or – punctuation, please

Posted by in 15 Sep, 2009

Either the Papua New Guinea police are offering an unusual reward for information as to the whereabouts of this guy, or ABC News should add some punctuation to this headline.

I would suggest one of the following:
Bananas-for-sex cult leader on the run; or
“Bananas for sex” cult leader on the run; or
Bananas for sex; cult leader on the run (yes, this one lends a completely different meaning)

You can read the full story here.

Thursday Flora

Posted by in 10 Sep, 2009

Dahlias:

This looks like a dwarf variety of clematis:

Hollyhock:

Purple flowers with squash:

Some sort of a shrub or tree, with what looks like a tomato (that clearly doesn’t belong there) at the base:

A lovely variety of sunflowers:

I have no idea what this is, but I love the color contrast of the flowers against the leaves, and it’s interesting that the new foliage comes in red and then turns chartreuse:
