{"id":82,"date":"2007-03-17T22:15:41","date_gmt":"2007-03-18T05:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/steve.isitfridayyet.info\/?p=82"},"modified":"2007-03-17T22:15:41","modified_gmt":"2007-03-18T05:15:41","slug":"back-to-berkeley-baby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/steve.isitfridayyet.info\/?p=82","title":{"rendered":"Back to Berkeley, baby!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font color=\"#008080\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>Saturday, March 17<\/strong><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Today was a travel day<font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">\u2014<\/font>packing, waiting for the airport shuttle van, riding to the airport, waiting at the airport, flying, taking another shuttle van to our destination<font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">\u2014so today&#8217;s post is all about food.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">SeaTac Airport, lunch at <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Maki of Japan, SeaTac Airport\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsystemsunlimited.com\/restaurants\/makiofjapan.php\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Maki of Japan<\/strong><\/a> (located in the food court just past the security area for gates A through N).<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Plain steamed veggies (broccoli, carrots, celery, and cabbage) with steamed white rice.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Taste: \tMediocre.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Portion \tsize: Needs more veggies and less rice.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Price: \tModerate, $5.99 (excluding tip). <\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Kathy Casey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kathycasey.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathy Casey<\/a>&#8216;s <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Dish D'Lish\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kathycasey.com\/dish_d_lish.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dish D&#8217;Lish<\/a><\/strong> (located around the corner from the aforementioned food court, across the hall from Fireworks Gallery).<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Coffee (iced Americano with a bit of soy milk) and Sun Chips.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Taste: \tThe coffee tasted OK, nothing really to blog home about. The Sun \tChips were good, consistently Sun Chips.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Portion \tsize: Generous for the coffee, the usual single-serving snack-bag \tsize for the Sun Chips.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Price: \tCheap, $3.26 (<em>sans<\/em> tip).<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Dish D&#8217;Lish had several lacto and\/or ovo vegetarian choices, fresh as well as prefabricated foods. The Boyfriend had a salad with mixed greens, radicchio, dried cranberries, roasted hazelnuts, some sort of crumbly cheese (probably bleu or gorgonzola), and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Other vegetarian choices included breakfast sandwiches with eggs and\/or cheese, muffins, and yogurt\/granola\/fruit cups. Two items appeared to be natively vegan, though it&#8217;s hard to know for sure since the labels on the prefabricated foods don&#8217;t list the ingredients: Zesty pukecumber (er, cucumber) salad, and fresh-fruit cups.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Dinner at <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Cha-Ya Vegetarian Japanese Cuisine, Berkeley\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2005\/08\/12\/EBGPUE2A691.DTL&#038;type=food\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cha-Ya Vegetarian Japanese Cuisine<\/strong><\/a>, 1686 Shattuck Ave., <strong>Berkeley <\/strong>(510-981-1213). Delicious, as usual. <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">I had:<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">#14 \t<em>Ten Bou<\/em>. Lightly battered and deep-fried <em>atsuage<\/em> tofu \tand veggie sticks, including yam, carrot, banana squash, and green \tbeans. Served with <em>tempura<\/em> sauce.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">#19 \tMoon Garden. Steamed tofu custard with broccoli, zucchini, carrots, \t<em>shimeji<\/em> mushrooms (they looked like oversized <em>enokis<\/em>), \t<em>kabocha<\/em> squash, snow peas, and asparagus. Sprinkled with \tgingko nuts and soybeans.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Kiku \tMasa Japanese <em>sak\u00e9<\/em>.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">#49 \tOshiruko. Dessert; slices of <em>mochi<\/em> rice cakes in a warm bowl \tof sweetened azuki bean sauce.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Served at room temperature, the <em>sak\u00e9<\/em> went down smoothly. Pleasantly flavored on its own or following a bite of <em>Ten Bou<\/em> or Moon Garden, its dryness clashed with the sweet dessert. To get around that, I cleansed my palate with a couple of sips water and then chug-a-lugged more <em>sak\u00e9<\/em>.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">The Boyfriend had:<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">#17 \t<em>Hagetsu<\/em> and #21 <em>Taku-Sui<\/em> combination dinner. <em>Hagetsu<\/em>: \tPortobello mushrooms combined with <em>atsuage<\/em> tofu, lightly \tbattered and deep-fried. Served with kiwi sauce. <em>Taku-Sui<\/em>: \t<em>Gyoza<\/em> (potstickers), tofu, zucchini, napa cabbage, snap peas, \tasparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, and clear noodles floating in a \tflavorful broth. Served with <em>ponzu<\/em> (citrus and soy) sauce. \tAccompanied by miso soup, <em>sunomono<\/em> (cucumber and seaweed) \tsalad, and steamed white rice.<br \/>\nPlum \twine.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">#52 \tYellow Moon. Dessert; chunks of deep-fried banana topped with green \ttea sauce and sweetened azuki bean sauce.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">TB also ordered some <em>shiitake<\/em> mushroom sushi. Somehow, the chefs missed this. Not a problem, as TB had plenty to eat without the sushi and enough room left for dessert.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Speaking of dessert: I don&#8217;t recommend the Yellow Moon after a deep-fried appetizer or main course; it&#8217;s too heavy. I had two bites of TB&#8217;s Yellow Moon\u2014too much after my <em>tempura<\/em>.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Taste: \tWonderful.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Presentation: Elegant.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Portion \tsize: Perfectly adequate, especially when ordering two or more items \tand\/or a combo and\/or when sharing.<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Price: \tModerate edging toward expensive, $53 (excluding tip).<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[thumb:1268:c:l=p]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday, March 17 Today was a travel day\u2014packing, waiting for the airport shuttle van, riding to the airport, waiting at the airport, flying, taking another shuttle van to our destination\u2014so today&#8217;s post is all about food.
