This didn&#8217;t work out quite as planned, for two reasons. <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">First, the fabulous views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are toward the west. As you probably learned in childhood, the sun rises in the <em>east<\/em>. The rock does offer a good easterly view of the neighborhood\u2014lovely houses and gardens\u2014but the hills blocked any view of the actual sunrise.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Second, the fog that flowed in yesterday evening stuck around for the morning.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">[cpg_album:214,3]<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">After breakfast (see the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/steve.isitfridayyet.info\/?p=84\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Day 1<\/a><\/strong><\/font><\/font><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/steve.isitfridayyet.info\/?p=84\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">\u2014<\/font><\/font><\/a><\/strong><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/steve.isitfridayyet.info\/?p=84\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Food<\/a><\/strong> post for details), we decided to visit the Takara <em>sak\u00e9<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal\"> (rice wine) production facility<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal\" \/>. We had about an hour before Takara opened, so we meandered along a short stretch of Berkeley&#8217;s San Pablo Ave. to pass the time. <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">We arrived at <a title=\"Takara Sake USA Inc., Berkeley, CA\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/takarasake.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Takara Sake USA Inc.<\/strong><\/a> (708 Addison St., Berkeley) shortly after it opened. (If you&#8217;ve ever had warm <em>sak\u00e9<\/em>, you&#8217;ll recognize the aroma as soon as you open Takara&#8217;s doors.) &#8220;Takara&#8221; means &#8220;treasure from the rice paddy.&#8221; Takara produces the Sho Chiku Bai brand. The first character in Takara&#8217;s logo is &#8220;sho,&#8221; a pine tree, symbolilzing health. Next, &#8220;chiku,&#8221; bamboo, signifying prosperity. Last, &#8220;bai,&#8221; the plum, representing beauty.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">We wandered through the <em>sak\u00e9<\/em> museum, watched a short video about <em>sak\u00e9<\/em> making and Takara&#8217;s history, and then indulged in a free <em>sak\u00e9<\/em> tasting. Well, \u201cfree\u201d is misleading. While Takara doesn&#8217;t charge visitors to sample the <em>sak\u00e9<\/em>, TB and I both dropped quite a chunk of change to order <em>sak\u00e9<\/em> and have it shipped to our homes.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">[cpg_album:215,3]<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"2\">Thanks to my friends Christy and Les for the <em>sak\u00e9 <\/em>book they gave me a few months ago. I&#8217;ve read the section on the history of <em>sak\u00e9 <\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal\">and how it&#8217;s made and I&#8217;ve skimmed the parts on specific brands and where to taste and buy <em>sak\u00e9<\/em>. And, I must confess, I forgot to bring the book with me.
