KISS Cafe

Posted by in 26 Aug, 2009

2817 NW Market St., Ballard. I haven’t had anything to eat or drink at KISS Cafe, I’ve just always liked this sign. The cafe has some vegetarian menu options, but nothing natively vegan. (The menu is available from their Web site — for some reason, it’s saved as a .zip file although it’s a single, […]

A what end?

Posted by in 26 Aug, 2009

Spotted this in Ballard, around 34th Ave. NW and NW 57th St.: Obviously, this was originally a “Dead End” sign. I wonder if someone changed it to “Rear End,” and then someone else modified the first “R” into a “P.”

Worship at the Altar of Ballard’s New Condo* Overlords

Posted by in 29 Jun, 2009

Ballard’s new condo* overlords must be really tiny, with extremely long legs. Here’s their altar: *Photos taken behind Leva on Market, a new development of luxury apartments. It’s a common misconception that all of the mega residential buildings that have sprung up in Ballard over the past few years are condos. Technically, most if not […]

Posted by in 30 Nov, 2008

The Ballard Locks (a.k.a. the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks) are currently closed for annual cleaning and maintenance. And the lock that’s drained stinks. Of fish and barnacles, to be precise. The grounds are open, but the actual locks are closed to boats until Dec. 7. You can read more about it here.

Cold-brewed coffee

Posted by in 23 Jul, 2008

Best. Coffee. EVER. I read about cold-brewed coffee last year in the New York Times (Iced Coffee? No Sweat, 06/27/07). It sounded amazing. When I stopped at my favorite Caffe Fiore the next day, I asked if they offered or were planning to offer cold-brewed coffee. The barista told me they were planning to offer […]

Aw, hail—stuck

Posted by in 19 Oct, 2007

Wandering around the neighborhood this afternoon, I noticed a number of “bad thing indicator” lights flashing near the Ballard Bridge. And absolutely no traffic going onto or coming off of the bridge. I asked a local businessdude if he knew what was going on. He replied, “No, but it’s been this way for a couple […]
